History of Adaptive Skiing
At Arizona Snowbowl
Creating an adaptive ski program at The Arizona Snowbowl was always challenging due to uncertain snow conditions on the mountain. With the introduction of snowmaking four years ago, the creation of season start dates and season end dates allowed us to begin to create policies and procedures, train instructors to provide safe and effective lessons, and maintain year to year consistency with an adaptive skiing program. Starting by teaching only 12 students on year one, the program has seen an exponential increase to 64, 168, 317 and 377 in student numbers each year thereafter. During the beginning of our 2016/2017 season we will provide our 1000th lesson!
This increase in lesson numbers has also increased the need for financial support, which is where Northern Arizona Adaptive Sports Association comes in to support the adaptive ski program at Arizona Snowbowl, and create new adaptive outdoor recreation to local residents, visitors, regional school groups and recreational and rehabilitation programs from around the state of Arizona and beyond.
